Kaninë is a small village sitting in the mountains above the city of Vlora, overlooking the Mediterranean where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. This village is particularly special because it is the origin of the famous Kalijnot olive variety, in which Albania is known for. As of now, you cannot find this olive anywhere else in the world. Its oil is known for its naturally high polyphenol feature and a distinct robust flavor accentuated by earthy and bitter notes. The estimated age of the trees in Kanine are between 1000-3000 years old. Kanine has a very long tradition of harvesting olives and has been since antiquity, possibly as far back as the time of Pyrrhus of Epirus.

Throughout the olive harvest, villagers from Kanine would bring their olives to the olive oil factory in Tragjas. Some would take the oil back home with them, and some would sell their olives directly to the factory, who would later sell the oil. Working directly with Daniel, the owner of the factory, we sought out to buy 2000 liters of the oil from Kanine produced in October. Throughout the month, Daniel stored the produced oil in a large inox stainless steel container. At the end of October he filled 4000 half liter bottles with this oil.

While our Kanine oil is a blend, it is a blend made from pure Kalijnot olives, and only from trees in a very small area, all harvested in October. This oil is for those who want a premium oil, but are looking for a consistent taste if they buy several bottles, or order a subscription.
