We have lived in Albania for five years now, right on the Mediterranean Coast. Our home is in the beautiful village of Vuno right in the middle of the Albanian Riviera. We are surrounded by ancient olive trees and have been blessed to indulge in the freshest olive oil we have ever come by. In our small village, most of the olive trees go unharvested as many of the owners are widows or elderly. Finally, we decided to get involved and start a family business bringing this olive oil to the United States. We met in Albania in 2021 on our own paths. After traveling all over the country by motorbike, we ended up staying and started renovating an old village house. Shortly after, we opened up a hostel and guesthouse for travelers in that same house. Since then, we have become active members of our community as well as brought many tourists into Vuno. Over the years we have hosted people from all over the world in our home, organized many hiking, kayaking, boating, diving and fishing tours, opened up the first vegetarian restaurant in the area, and have worked alongside so many of our neighbors and friends. In 2024 we got married here in a beautiful cave by the sea with friends and family from around the world.
The area that we live in, between Vlore and Himare, is the most famous for olive oil throughout the country. Vuno, though a small village, alone has 25,000 trees. The terroir of this region results from an ideal blend of environmental factors that are perfect for producing bold, high-quality olive oil. Its mountainous terrain and well-drained soils result in olive trees growing with greater resilience, concentrating flavor in their fruit. The climate is distinctly Mediterranean (intense sun, coastal breeze): long, hot, dry summers that boost polyphenol development—responsible for the oil’s peppery, bitter character and antioxidant strength—and mild, wet winters that sustain tree health and allow for proper dormancy.
